On Friday March 26th and Saturday March 27th, The Hillsboro Hawks Boys Track team took on 12 other schools in the McCullough-Douglas Invitational at Festus High School. The Hawks ended up with 107.5 points at the end of the two-day event, which was enough to earn silver. They fell just short of the host school’s 170.5 points.
“[The] Festus meet was an early test to see where we were compared to some really good competition. Finishing second, while it wasn’t a surprise, did let me know a lot about our group this year,” said Head Coach Todd Medley.
The field events were the centerpiece of Hillsboro’s performance at the meet, with Tristan Jones earning 1st place in long jump and 3rd in triple jump. Sam Wright earned 4th in long jump. Zach McNees took home 1st place in discus and 3rd in shotput. Freshman Payton Brown took 4th in Javelin.
The track events had a lot of bright spots as well. Wright won both hurdle races by a wide margin in his first ever high school track meet. Cruz Valencia walked away with 3rd in the 100m and 2nd in the 400m.
“I’m expecting our sprints to continue to evolve as we move on, as well as our distance crew, who ran extremely well,” said Medley, “They are very young and inexperienced on the track and they continue to drop time and gain confidence.”
Hillsboro Varsity Track will take on Perryville Tuesday April 5th for their next chance to impress.
