Ste. Gen Boys Cross Country May Be Small in Numbers, but are Big in Potential

The Ste. Genevieve boys cross country team has the potential to impact every meet they compete in. The team possesses several individuals who can put pressure on the top runners in each meet.

The Ste. Genevieve boys cross country team hasn’t made too many dents in team standings in the last few years.  Numbers have been low, and in most cases, the Dragons can’t qualify in the team rankings.  This year, SGHS may face the same dilemma, but those wearing the green and white will certainly impact every competition in which they compete.

“We have a small but mighty group,” head coach Sierra Boyd exclaimed.  “We are always welcoming to others who want to come out to run cross country.”  And anyone who would join this contingent would be a part of an incredibly hard working squad.

Devin St. Clair, Nathan St. Clair, Mason Gegg, and Levi Wiegand return for the 2020 campaign.  Devin St. Clair and Gegg were all-conference selections last season after seventh and 12th place finishes in the MAAA meet respectively.  Wiegand finished in 14th place as well.  All four runners placed between 21st and 46th at districts, not qualifying for sectionals, but making them all hungry for more in 2020.

Corey Simmons has joined the team this season, and Coach Boyd sees good things ahead.  “Devin, Nathan, Mason, Levi, and Corey have all shown great determination this summer, and they are all setting themselves up for a great season,” she said.  “I am proud of their hard work and dedication to building a base of miles.”

Boyd notices that the boys’ work ethic is something that drives them, and each individual feeds off of it.  “Their hard-working mentality is a great strength,” she said.  “They push each other to give their best each day, and they keep each other encouraged and focused.  As the workouts and meets begin to wear on them, they will need to rely on those strengths to push through to the end of the season to finish strong.  I have high hopes for the boys to qualify to compete at the state cross country meet.

The Dragons begin that journey on Saturday, August 29 in Ironton at the Arcadia Valley Meet.  For a look at the complete schedule, click here:  2020 Ste. Gen Cross Country Schedule
