On Saturday, January 30 the Ste. Genevieve Dragons JV Wrestlers entered nine young men into the SEMO Conference Junior Varsity Tournament. The team finished fifth out of 11 schools with 154 total team points, including one individual Gold Medalist and three Silver Medalists. Coach Bryan Gegg commented on his team’s success, “Today, everyone got at least one win and many kids continue to show improvement.”
Before the match, Gegg told his team, “After today, some of you might have a chance to wrestle Varsity in case of injury, but you need to leave everything out there on the mat.”
Wrestling at the 120 lb. weight class, Nicholas Wirick took second place with a 1-1 record, with his win coming by pin.
At 138, Justin Schwent placed second. He had a 4-1 record with four pins. Schwent said the highlight of his day was pinning an opponent in 27 seconds.
Levi Wiegand, at 145, also placed second. He had a 4-1 record with four pins.
At 152, Zachary Flieg, placed fourth, with a 2-2 record that included a pin.
Dalton McBride, at 160, had an incredible performance. He brought home a Gold Medal, by winning five matches, all by pin.
Also at 160, Joseph Simmons placed seventh with a 2-3 record, with one pin.
Ste. Gen entered two wrestlers at 170. Gabriel Willets placed seventh with a 2-3 record and two pins, while Tyler Moyer finished ninth with a 1-4 record.
At 195, Damien Wheeler placed fifth with an 0-4 record.
The JV Dragons will continue to train with the Varsity team to keep them prepared for the final two weeks of the season, leading up to the district tournament. The hopes of making the Varsity squad next season will drive these young men to continue to push themselves to improve both on and off the mat.
