It’s a respectful and humble culture that leads to success on a variety of spectrums, but that doesn’t mean that we’re going to shy away from championing an individual who had a truly impressive performance within the week.
We’ve teamed up with the good people at Pettus Automotive to bring you a feature that will highlight one student athlete’s outstanding individual performance every week. Whether on the gridiron, golf course, diamond or hardwood, there is always someone doing something special. And we thought you’d all like to know about it.
This week the honor goes to James Smith, the dual threat from the St. Pius X Lancers. The 6’2”, 190 lb Senior Quarterback/Safety put on an absolute show in the Lancers’ second game of the season. A game in which his team absolutely trounced the DuBourg Cavaliers 74-14.
The win moved the Lancers to 2-0 on the young season, and Smith went off on both fronts. On the passing side of things, he was 4-of-9 for 46 yards and a touchdown as the prime signal caller, but he did most of the damage with his legs. On the ground, while quarterbacking the offense, he ripped off 10 runs for 122 yards and three TDs.
Including one that was a direct snap for a 74-yard score where he broke free and bolted down the sideline to make the entire Cavalier defense miss. It was early in the game, but it was effectively the clinching blow that sealed the undisputed victory.
Here are a few of James’ highlights from Week 2
Smith wasn’t satisfied with just his offensive prowess though. He made his mark on the defensive side of the ball as well. Starting at safety as part of his “double duty”, all he did was generate four tackles and snag two interceptions… with one of those pilfers going for a pick-6, where he raced into the end zone after reading his counterpart perfectly.
In total, the complete package amassed five touchdowns in the game and stood out in a game full of standouts. It’s hard to be the biggest name in the room when your team comes up with 74 points, but Smith managed to do so in this one.
Quite the individual effort.
Thanks to Pettus Automotive for making this possible, and congratulations to James Smith on one heck of a week to start the season.
