The Hawks JV Boys Squad Dominates St. Pius but Drops a Close One to Potosi

The Hillsboro boys JV basketball team earned a split in its last two games coming away with a dominating win over St. Pius X before dropping a tough contest to Potosi.

Hillsboro 58, St. Pius X 27

After an even 10-10 first quarter, the Hawks took over the second outscoring St. Pius X 15-7 to lead 25-15 at the break. The team carried its success over into the second half with a dominating 33-10 advantage en route to the 31-point win.

“I would say against St. Pius X, we were playing really well on defense,” said Kobe Stacey. “Also, we were just running our offense well, we were getting open looks and hitting our shots.”

Stacy and Jaxon Day tied with 10 points each. Payton Brown followed with nine points, while Tyler Tieken concluded with eight points.

Potosi 43, Hillsboro 40

After gaining a 9-7 lead in the first quarter, the Hawks had an outstanding second where they outscored Potosi 19-10 to lead by 11 at the break.

In the third, though the Hawks shooting went cold and Potosi took advantage outscoring them 14-5 to trim the deficit down to 33-31. Potosi carried that momentum into the fourth and it was the Trojans hanging on for the three-point win.

“I feel like we made a bunch of simple mistakes against Potosi that we should not have made which lost us the game,” said Tyler Tieken. “We played great in both games just wasn’t enough to beat them.”

Jaxon Day led with nine points for the Hawks. Christian Groner added eight, while Jonah Allison and Alex Whaley ended with seven each.

“Our intensity wasn’t as high at the Potosi game and we were just turning the ball over way too much and not executing the way we did against St. Pius X,” said Jonah Allison.

The team returns to action on January 19th when they’ll visit St. Clair. Tip-off at 7 p.m.
