The Junior Varsity Dragons of Set. Genevieve took to the mats to show their prowess in the Cape Central JV Tournament. Ste. Gen entered seven wrestlers into the tournament, which took place on Monday, December 21.
Wrestling at the 126 lb. weight class was Nicholas Wirick, who went 1-4, with his one win coming by pin.
At 138, Justin Schwent went 4-1 and said, “The wrestler that beat me was from Jackson, so I will probably be seeing him again at a future tournament, and get my redemption and get a win against him.”
Nicholas Henderson entered at 145 and went 0-4.
At 152, Zachary Flieg was 2-1, pinning one opponent.
Dalton McBride wrestled at 160, and won two matches by pin, for a 2-3 record.
At 170, Ste. Genevieve entered two wrestlers. Matthew Schmidt went 2-3, with two pins, while Tyler Moyers went 0-3. Moyers commented, “We did okay as a team, but we could’ve done better. Overall it was good.” He went on, “I need to work on my front headlocks and finishing my shots. I also need to work on not hesitating.”
Lastly, at 195, Damien Wheeler also went 0-3.
Every match is a learning opportunity, especially at the Junior Varsity level. These young athletes proved they have the courage to compete, eventually, at the Varsity level.
