Jefferson Falls to 1-2 With Tight Loss at Herculaneum

Jefferson’s defense continues to play at a very high level, but the offense is still trying to find its footing after a loss at Herculaneum in Week 3.

The good news for the Jefferson R7 High School football team Friday night…the Blue Jays’ stingy defense held Herculaneum to a season-low 16 points. The bad news…the offense could only muster half of that in a 16-8 loss to the undefeated Blackcats in Herky.

With the game tied 8-8 early in the fourth quarter, Herculaneum scored the decisive touchdown on a pass from standout quarterback Jackson Dearing to Mike Moloney. Moloney then scored the two-point conversion for the final margin.

The win broke Herky’s seven game losing streak to Jefferson, and they had to feel vindicated after suffering at the hands of the Blue Jays for the better part of a decade.

Moloney, a defensive difference-maker, was the key factor on the other side of the ball.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Blackcats broke the ice in the second quarter on a short TD run by Moloney. He also scored the two-point conversion to put his team up 8-0.

The Blue Jays answered back on a one-yard scoring run by Senior Sean Usery, and then the successful two-point conversion tied the game, but Moloney’s aforementioned heroics would up being the difference. That closed out the game and dropped the Blue Jays to 1-2 on the season despite boasting one of the best defenses in their Class.

Jefferson managed 202 total yards on offense, led by the Usery. A week after rushing for over 100 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Cuba, he put together a 93-yard effort and the lone score against Herky. Tyler Crader added 28 yards on nine carries.

As far as through the air, Kole Williams led the receiving corps with three catches for 30 yards, but Jefferson just couldn’t seem to get the passing game going, which is not usual for a club that specializes in defense and running the ball.

The Blue Jays had a pair of turnovers in the game, and another defensive effort worthy of acclaim was talented Senior Sam Stokes who led the way in the week two victory with ten tackles. With Stokes crushing the Herky offense with a team-high 13 total tackles, and Gavin Theodoro chipped in with four tackles and an interception.

The Blue Jays are now 1-2 and 0-1 in the Jefferson County Athletic Association. They will be back home on Friday, September 16th to take on St. Pius, who they beaten 3 out of the last four years. The Lancers are 2-1 after back-to-back shutout wins over Bishop Dubourg and Grandview. They lost their season opener to undefeated Brentwood.
