The Hillsboro Hawks Girls Track and Field team had a good showing at their home meet with several podium finishes and personal bests set.
Head Coach Dina Holland praised her team’s effort against some of the toughest competition they have seen yet. “The Hillsboro Invitational went very well with some beautiful weather last Friday. We had 20 teams with some incredible competition. It was truly a great meet to attend before postseason meets begin. Lauren Nichols placed 3rd in the open 400 Meter Run (1:01:89) and was on the third place 4×4 Relay with teammates Sidney Buettner, Reese Buettner and Maya Wright (4:15:85). [Wright] continued her dominance in the Hurdles placing 2nd in the 100 Meter race (16.61). Cassidy Herget claimed the 4th spot in a highly competitive High Jump, and Krista Miller leapt her way into 4th place in Triple Jump as her break-out Freshman year continued. Evie Roland also took 4th place out of 34 Javelin throwers.”
Herget had a fantastic meet in nearly every event she competed in, including a third place finish in High Jump, clearing 1.52 meters. “I got a new personal best in every event I did except for Javelin,” said Herget. “None of them were good enough for first place, but I’m hoping that changes for Districts this weekend and I do nothing but keep getting better.”
Roland earned a new personal record in the Javelin with 37.46 meters, which was good enough for fourth place. “There was a lot of good competition there but I got a new personal record so I was pretty happy with how I performed,” said Roland.
Hillsboro hosts the Class 4 District 2 meet on Saturday May 15th. The Hawks have had their struggles this season, but there has been an upward trajectory over the course of the year. If there was ever a time to peak as a team, it’s now.
