Indians Win Three Straight, Move to 12-2

The Jackson Indians sweep the week, winning three games and improving their record to 12-2 on the season.

Following up a magical Sunday at Busch Stadium, The Jackson Indians got back to business this week and dispatched all three of their opponents to move to 12-2 on the season. The Indians doubled up Cape Central 4-2 before wiping the floor with Sikeston and Northwest 10-0 and 11-1, respectively.

The first obstacle on the Indians warpath was the Cape Central Tigers on Tuesday April 10th. It was a scoreless affair until the third inning when Jackson broke through with an RBI single and a huge double from Caden Bogenpohl that plated two. The Tigers answered with a run in the top of the fourth and again in the sixth, but the Indians tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the inning and held on for the 4-2 victory.

This one was the Bogenpohl show. Not only did he drive in the game-winning run with that clutch RBI double, but he also got the start and absolutely dazzled in this one. He scattered three hits over six frames, allowing just two earned runs with nine punch outs and zero walks to earn the win. Baden Hackworth came on as the fireman in the seventh and pitched a perfect inning with two Ks to earn the save.

Two days later (after Wednesday’s tilt was postponed due to rain) Jackson hosted the Sikeston Bulldogs, and they didn’t waste any time in this one. They scored one in the first before breaking the game open in the second with four more, highlighted by a two-run bomb from Henley Parker and a solo shot from Hackworth. Parker then drove in two more with a single in the third and the Indians had opened up a 6-0 lead.

Jackson added one more in the fifth and then a pair in the sixth on a Kyle Richardson double and a an error to trigger the mercy rule and end the game an inning early. Parker did most of the damage in this one, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a pair of walks, a homer and four RBI. Tyler Malugen was the only other player with multiple hits, but Grant Dotson had an interesting game, going 1-for-1 with four runs scored and a pair of stolen bases.

On the mound it was all Cayden Drum. The big hurler picked up the victory, tossing a complete game shutout that featured just two hits, a walk and nine Ks. Certainly a rebound effort after he struggled a bit in the game at Busch against Edwardsville.

The final game of the week came on Friday, and was again on Jackson’s home field. This time it was the Northwest Lions who felt the wrath of this red-hot Indians lineup, and once again the Tribe started fast. It was a bit of a nickel-and-dime inning full of walks, singles and sac flies, but it generated four runs and a quick, sizable lead.

North County got on the board in the second with a run, but it was all Jackson after that. They went back to scratching out runs in the fourth, picking up three more with a potpourri of RBI-groundouts and sac flies. Then in the fifth the Indians used a double, HBP, single, double and another single without recording an out to mercy-rule the Lions in the fifth.

Richardson was the big hitter in this one with four RBI on a pair of hits that included a double, while Quinton Borders and Carson Hartlein were the other two Indians with multiple hits. Toeing the rubber was ace JP Sauer, who went the distance, allowing just one run on on five hits. He didn’t walk a batter and racked up nine strikeouts.

That’s about as dominant of week that you can have and Jackson is truly in midseason form, playing at a championship-caliber level. They now sit at 12-2 on the season and will travel on Monday to take on the NMCC Eagles. Indians Win Three Straight, Move to 12-2
