Festus Wrestlers Bring Home Hardware from Cape

The Wrestling Tigers of Festus, both Boys and Girls, shine in Cape Girardeau and win a pair of duals over the Holiday break.

It’s been an exciting Holiday break for the Festus Wrestling Tigers. The Varsity Boys and Girls squads competed in the 48th Annual Tiger Classic in Cape Girardeau, MO, hosted by Cape Central High School. After that, the boys entered in the Don Fuhrmann Duals hosted by Hillsboro High School.

In the first tournament, the Tiger Classic, which took place December 17th and 18th, the girls team took home four medals. LeeAnn Dobbs won Gold at the 100 lb. weight class. She is currently 6-0 on the season, and has been dominating her competition.

With another outstanding performance, Lauren Mills also took home a Gold Medal at 125 lbs. She is destroying the opposition this season, and is undefeated at 13-0. She has either pinned or won by technical fall in every match, and hasn’t even needed the third period to get the job done. Appropriately, she is ranked fifth in the state at her weight class.

Having an excellent seasons so far as well are Sarah Gazaway and Ella Georgevich. At 105 lbs. Gazaway is currently 9-4 and walked out of the tournament with a Silver Medal around her neck. Putting in hard work as well was Georgevich, and for her work on this day she took home a fourth place medal at 141 lbs.

Also having a nice showing was the Boys team, who brought home three medals for their efforts. At 126 lbs., Austin Neff was successful all the way up until the finals when he suffered his first loss of the season. Currently at 13-1, Neff still was able to sport the Silver Medal at the tournament. At 138 lbs., Blake Sexton just missed the podium, finishing in fourth. He is having a great season and is currently 18-6. Blake Naumann, at 182 lbs., took home a sixth place medal.

On December 29th, the Boys then traveled to Hillsboro to compete it the Don Fuhrmann Duals Tournament. Unfortunately, the team only entered seven wrestlers, making it quite difficult to win duals. Nonetheless, the Tigers still defeated Mehlville and Webster Groves, but lost three other duals, including a tough 24-21 loss to Fox.

Individually, Festus was solid. Turning in an outstanding undefeated performance on the day was Freshman Peyton Shaver at 160 lbs. He is sitting pretty with a 21-2 record so far. Also with a nice showing was Sexton who went 4-1 at the tournament.

Hopefully the time off since these matches has recharged the Tigers, because starting this week, the season keeps on rolling. First up, Festus will compete at Windsor this Thursday, January 6th in a tri-meet with both Windsor and Herculaneum. After that, coming up this Saturday January 8th, both teams will be in action again at the Park Hills Central Tournament. Let’s go Tigers! Festus Wrestlers Bring Home Hardware from Cape
