The season is back under way as the Hillsboro High School Varsity Wrestling Team competed in the Don Fuhrman Dual meet this past Wednesday, December 29th. The Hawks competed in five head-to-head duals and ran the table, defeating all five of their opponents. Multi-dual meets are always a grueling day as the potential to wrestle multiple matches can be exhausting both mentally and physically. However, the Hawks persevered and came out victorious more times than not.
First, Hillsboro squared off against Carl Junction and handled their business quite easily, coming away with the victory 51-22. Sam Melton got a major decision victory 10-2 to open the scoring, and Gavin Alexander was then successful putting away his opponent by technical fall 16-0. The Hawks then rattled off five straight pins by Jackson Tucker, Blake Jackson, Nate Barnett, Sam Richardson and Evan Morris. Griffin Ray was up next and won a major decision for his team 10-0. Eddie Hines followed with a decision win 6-0, and, finally, Dalton Litzsinger ended the match with a decision victory 10-3.
The team then matched up with Poplar Bluff, resulting in a nearly identical result. The Hawks came out on top again, this time 51-21. Gabe Barnett was the opening grappler and got the first pin of three in a row for his team. Alexander and Jackson each also earned pins shortly thereafter. Next up, Barnett won again, this time by decision 10-3, followed by Richardson also picking up a 7-0 decision. Morris was next adding a 6-1 decision win over his foe and then Ray stepped up next and earned a pin for his work. Litzsinger followed suit with a pin as well to close out the scoring.
Sikeston was the next team standing in the way. The Hawks swept the tilt 80-0, with seven Hawks earning pins. Those grapplers were Jackson, Richardson, Morris, Ray, Hines, Litzsinger and Aidan Petit. Barnett won by major decision 12-1, and Wyatt Yeager took home an 8-0 major decision as well.
Up next was Mexico. This dual ended with Hillsboro victorious by the score of 60-12 with six Hawks winning by pin. This time it was Richardson, Morris, Ray, Litzsinger, Ethan Engel and Jordan Penick taking home six points each for their efforts. After them, adding decision wins were Jackson and Alexander, winning by 4-2 and 6-2, respectively.
In the final competition of the day, Hillsboro went up against Pacific, and did what they do best, win wrestling matches. The boys were easily victorious again, this time winning 76-3. Barnett got the first points with a major decision win 8-0. Then Tucker, Barnett, Morris, Ray, Hines, Litzsinger and Engel all finished off their foes with pins.
It was quite a successful outing for the Hawks. However, these grapplers and their top-notch coaching staff demand nothing less than perfection. Even though they brought home the clean sheet, these boys will be back in the practice room grinding it out, always improving and preparing for what lays ahead.
