The Festus Tigers Junior Varsity Baseball Team dropped a game to the Parkway Central Colts, but capped off their season with a convincing win against the Perryville Pirates.
The game against the Colts took place on Tuesday. Parkway Central wasted no time and jumped out to an immediate lead. They scored two runs in the first and one in the second and went up 3-0.
Festus did not push a run across until the top of the fourth. Brayden Montgomery roped a double into right field that brought Trenton Young in to score. The Tigers added another run in the top of the fifth when Tyler Reece slapped a double into left field that brought Henry Roux around to score. Unfortunately for the Tigers, that was all the offense they could muster up. Festus lost the game 3-2.
Roux was 1-3 with a run scored. Montgomery and Reece were both 1-3 with an RBI. Young scored a run as well. The Colts outhit the Tigers 8-4.
Gavin Williams started the game on the mound. He threw three innings, allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out two batters. Roux came out of the bullpen in relief. He pitched three innings and struck out three batters.
The lack of offense did not carry over into Festus’ game against Perryville. In fact, it was the exact opposite.
The Tigers started the game against the Pirates with a five-run first inning. Young hit an RBI triple that kicked off the scoring. Cole Skaggs followed that up with an RBI double. Then, Montgomery singled in Skaggs. They scored two more runs in the first and left the inning ahead 5-1.
The scoring didn’t stop there. Montgomery started the bottom of the second inning with a two-RBI single. Carter White then cracked a double into left field that scored both Skaggs and Montgomery. They added another run in the inning off a fielder’s choice and went up 10-1.
Festus piled on six more runs in the bottom of the third and closed out the game. The Tigers won 16-1 and finished the regular season 11-9.
Montgomery, Roux and White all led the team with two hits. Montgomery topped everyone with three RBIs and White was just behind with two of his own. Young and Skaggs tied for the team lead in runs scored with three. Roux, White and Williams all scored two runs, and the Tigers outhit the Pirates 11-3.
Reece started the game and pitched all three innings. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out three batters.
That is all she wrote for the Festus Tigers JV team. They made immense strides in their progression and helped provide a good future for the varsity squad.
“We’ve progressed throughout the year greatly,” Austin Medley said. “We’ve been more talkative in the dugout, we bring teammates up when they’re down, and we also started to get a feel on how each other played and that helped us.”
The future of Festus baseball is in good hands with this talented group of young men. Look out for their Varsity careers in the future.
