Festus Girls Track Wins McCullough-Douglas Invitational Track Meet

The Festus Tigers Varsity Girls Track team defeats 12 other schools to bring home the gold in the McCullough-Douglas Invitational. They are off to a strong start to the season.

On Friday, March 26th and Saturday, March 27th, the Festus Tigers Girls Track team let their roar be heard at the McCullough-Douglas Invitational meet. The Girls Varsity squad sped past the competition, topping 12 other schools, en route to bringing home the first place finish.

In the Discus, Taylor McMillin finished second. Head Coach Wesley Armbruster said, “Taylor’s hard work and commitment continue to pay dividends. She established two new PR’s in the discus with a throw of 32.89m, and javelin with a throw of 27.28m.”

Ella Shy had a strong showing in the pole vault with a jump of 2.43m, and ran the 110m hurdles in 17.76 seconds, finishing on the podium in both events.


Abbie Rogers and Sophie Nolan also competed in the pole vault. Rogers jumped 2.43m which tied her for second place, while Nolan jumped 2.28m to finish in fifth place. Armbruster commented, “Festus is establishing a three-headed monster in the event. We expect to see some tremendous growth as we transition to April.”

Gabbi Burkard and Angela Bloodworth, both Freshmen, competed in Saturday’s triple jump competition with only three practice sessions of experience. Burkard jumped 9.74m to land in fifth place. Bloodworth’s best jump was 9.00m. Armbruster noted, “Both are expected to make big strides in the event as they continue under Coach Houston’s tutelage.”

In the 4x200m relay, Alexis Biehle, My’Kaila Batee, Bloodworth and Burkard finished in 1:53.84 to finish in fourth place. Armbruster said, “While we hope to improve in the event as the season progresses, this is the fastest performance in the relay in the last 10 years.”

In the 4x100m relay, Burkard, Biehle, Batee and Nolen finished with a time of 53.11 seconds to finish in second place.

In the distance events, Demi White ran the 800m in 2.36.45, good for a fifth place finish. Her sister, Dari White finished in fourth place in the 3200m with a time of 12.25.87.

This was a heck of a showing for Festus. The Tigers can now take this experience and build on it, as they will look to improve their skills further as the season progresses. The next meet takes place this Thursday, April 1st, at Farmington.
