The Hillsboro Hawks Junior Varsity wrestling team competed in the Fox invitational tournament this past Saturday, January 16. The Hawks swept the competition, defeating all four schools they faced, including a dramatic end to the final dual against Lafayette. Head Coach Matt Mitchell commented, “Our JV boys have been really coming along the last couple of weeks. They are really starting to make improvements. We are excited to watch them finish the year strong.”
The team looked untouchable most of the day, first defeating Eureka by the score of 60-18. The first dual had seven contested weight classes, all won by Hillsboro. Ben Lawson, Brendan Emmett, Colton Gronborg, Jacob Hoos and Wyatt Yaeger all won by pin. Logan Johnson and Dawson Owens both won by decision.
Next up was the dual against Fox which Hillsboro won by the score of 48-18. This time there were eight contested weight classes, five won by hillsboro. Nathan Angle, Emmett, Hoos, Andrew Isaacson and Yaeger all won by pin.
In the next dual, Hillsboro beat Northwest (Cedar Hill) 49-18. Of the seven contested weight classes, Hillsboro won four. Emmett, Owens and Yaeger won by pin. Gronborg won by decision.
Lastly, in the finals, Hillsboro defeated Lafayette with a two-point squeaker, 36-34. There were nine contested weight classes, of which Hillsboro won four. Angle, Emmett, Owens, and Yaeger each won by pin. Yaegar’s win was key, as the Hawks were down four team points going into the final match. Yaeger pulled off the pin, scoring six team points, and winning the dual and championship for his Hawks.
The final meet of the season will be on January 30, as the team will enter the SEMO JV tournament taking place in Jackson, Missouri.
