Festus Tigers Take Down Windsor & Perryville, Improve to 6-1

The Festus Tigers pull off an incredible victory against Windsor before sinking the Perryville Pirates for a clean sweep over the week.

It was a strong week for the Festus Tigers Boys Varsity Basketball team, as they won a come-from-behind stunner against the Windsor Owls on Tuesday before burying the Perryville Pirates three days later. The Tigers are rolling this season at 6-1, with their only loss coming in the finals of the Gene Steighorst Invitational.

The game against Windsor was one for the history books. Both teams came out a little sluggish in the first quarter and were knotted at 12 at the end of the frame. Arhmad Branch, however, was on his game early with seven first-quarter points. The Tigers got rolling in the second though, putting up 17, thanks to a pair of big three-pointers from Carter Roth. They held the Owls to 13 and took a four-point lead into the halftime break.

Windsor would creep back into the game after play resumed. They won the third quarter battle 14-13, but that just set the stage for a wild final frame. The teams were trading buckets, but then the Owls went on a run and pulled away. They were up by four in the final minute, but Festus got the ball back and Branch made a huge three to pull them within one. On Windsor’s ensuing possession, Branch stole ball, broke free and and streaked to the basket for the game-winning layup.

The Owls had a chance to answer, but Hayden Bates stole the ball on Windsor’s final possession and the Tigers ran out the clock. It was a marvelous, clutch 60-59 victory that Festus fans won’t soon forget.

Branch led the charge with 23 points to go along with his last-minute heroics, and really stole the show in this one. Roth would up with a trio of three-pointers and finished with 11 points, while Bates had 10 to go along with his game-clinching steal.

After that dramatic home win, the Tigers travelled to Perryville on Friday to take on the Pirates, and they wasted no time in this one. Festus poured in 31 first-quarter points and held the home team to just six. This one was more or less over from the jump. Branch had a ridiculous 14 points in the frame and Roth had 11, making three shots from beyond the arc.

The second quarter saw the Tigers extend their lead after a 13-9 effort and they cruised into the locker room with a 44-15 lead at the half.

The third quarter was not Festus’ finest hour, as the Pirates dominated the period with a 21-9 advantage, but it still wasn’t enough to climb out of the cavernous hole that the Tigers had dug for them. Festus then got back to business in the fourth, closing out the game with a 14-6 showing after getting the defense back on track. They took down the Pirates 67-42 and moved to 6-1 on the season.

Branch was the leading scorer once again with 18 total after his insane first quarter, and Roth was nipping at his heels with 16 after his own first-quarter theatrics. Logan Cash had a big game as well with 15 to close out the scorers in double digits.

This is shaping up to be an impressive season for the Tigers and they will look to contain this momentum over the holiday break before they enter the Bob Sechrest Jr. Christmas Tournament on 12/26.
