Friday Night Preview Week 5: Jefferson R7 Blue Jays

At 1-3, Jefferson is looking to get its offense cranking against a Bayless program that is also 1-3 after a season opening win over Principia.

A pair of teams looking to jumpstart their seasons meet in St. Louis on Friday night when Jefferson plays at Bayless. Both teams are off to 1-3 starts, so this battle will start the climb back to .500 for one squad.

This is the first time the Blue Jays have started 1-3 since 2014, their last season with a losing record. On the flip side, the Bronchos’ program has fallen on hard times in recent years as well. Their season opening 14-7 win over Principia broke a 12-game losing streak.

Since its season opening win, Bayless has dropped games to Grandview, Crystal City and Perryville.

The Bronchos offense is led by running back Mark Patton who has 370 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He had 202 yards in a 32-30 loss to Grandview.

Quarterback James Houston averages about ten pass attempts per game, but he hasn’t been a world-beater. He has two TD passes and four interceptions so far on the season.

Jefferson, however, is trying to find a way to help out its strong defense by getting the ball in the end zone on a more consistent basis. Matt Atley’s ballclub has scored just eight touchdowns in the first four games and five of those came in the team’s lone win over Cuba.

A switch to Kole Williams at quarterback last week against St. Pius produced a pair of touchdown passes, but that wasn’t enough in a 27-12 loss. Sean Usery leads the running game. He’s averaging 6.1 yards per carry and has scored four touchdowns, and is the focal point of the team’s offense.

Sam Stokes is the leading force on a defense allowing just 14 points per game, racking up 43 total tackles. Nate Breeze is second on the team with 18 solo tackles and has a team best two interceptions.

Jefferson and Bayless kickoff this Friday at 7 p.m. to fight for that all-important second victory. Friday Night Preview Week 5: Jefferson R7 Blue Jays
