On 11/4, the Hillsboro Hawks played the North County Raiders in the district finals for Varsity soccer. The Hawks came ready to play, and hung tough, but in the end the Raiders were able to put the winning goal into the back of the net, sending Hillsboro home as district runner-up, in a 2-1 defeat.
North County got on the board first at 14:45. Hillsboro was unable to respond in the first half, which ended 1-0.
At 59:40 of the second half, North County scored again, giving them a 2-0 lead. Finally, at 70:38, Hillsboro succeeded in finding the net themselves, cutting the lead in half, 2-1, on a goal by Werner Finder, assisted by Colton Leonard. “The goal was very uplifting and gave us hope that we still had the chance to win the game,” said Leonard. Unfortunately for the Hawks, that was all they could muster as North County held them off for the final ten minutes of play, ending the game 2-1.
Offensively, North County doled out an onslaught of 16 shots, with Hillsboro Goalkeeper AJ Krasnesky turning away 14. Hillsboro only managed three shots in total.
Hillsboro Head Coach Sam Nansel commented positively on his team’s effort and the season as a whole, “This was a very enjoyable season. It didn’t end like we wanted it to, but we worked hard all season and that’s all we could ask for from a team. We are very proud of them.”
The Hawks wrapped up their season with a 6-14 record.
