2021 Football Schedule Series:  Valle Catholic

The storied history of the Valle Catholic Warriors continues in 2021 and Ameritime Sports dives into the details of this year’s schedule.

The Valle Catholic Warriors are one of the most decorated football programs in Missouri, and they seem to show no signs of slowing down. The Warriors played their inagural season in Class 3 in 2020, and went 9-0 in the regular season, including ending the Blair Oaks Falcons 51-game regular season win streak. The Warriors season ended in the district tournament to a star studded St. Mary’s team.  The Warriors have beefed up their schedule dramatically by withdrawing from the I-55 Conference one year before expected.  Hopefully, the increased load during the season will have them ready to compete in a loaded Class 3 district… and a loaded Class 3 in general.

Week 1:  8/27 @ Skyline

Skyline went 9-2 last season and were a perfect 4-0 at home, so they will certainly pose a threat to the Warriors.  The Tigers finished in the top 5 in class 1 and gave State Champion, Windsor, all they wanted.  Valle dominated them in their only matchup last year with a 48-0 rout.  The Tigers from Urbana have only faced the Warriors two other times, both in the Class 1 tournament–once in 2011 and once in 2014.  Valle won both games; however, Coach Brandon Shelby returns a three-year starter at QB and many, many skill players.

Week 2:  9/03 @ Ste. Genevieve

Valle and Ste. Genevieve are one of the few small school-large school rivalries left in the state.  Historically, this match can go either way with Valle winning just a hair over 50% of the games.  Ste. Genevieve last defeated the Warriors 7-6 in 2018, and look for the Dragons to have some new energy this season with a new head coach in Valle Alumni Jay Pope.  Coach Pope is a former assistant at Valle where he spent over a decade walking the Warrior sideline.  Expect a little bit of extra grit in this one as these two head coaches know each other well, and strategy will be key for the victor.

Week 3:  9/10 @ St. Vincent

The Warriors have been playing the Indians since 1928.  This rivalry has had some great games over the years.  Coach Tim Schumer has the Indians playing consistent football and had a very good 2020 JV squad and made noise late in the Varsity season by almost defeating class 1 power house Hayti.  Look for the rivalry to continue…

Week 4:  9/17 @ St. Dominic

Valle doesn’t have a history with this non-district opponent, but the Crusaders of O’Fallon, MO did manage to go 7-5 last season while having a very challenging schedule. This year’s St. Dominic squad has huge numbers out and a real deal recruit at running back in Senior, Jackson Overton. The Crusaders also recently won their 7 on 7 tournament against some very good teams.  This will be an interesting match-up for the Warriors to see if they can compete against a very good Class 4 program in St. Dominic.

Week 5:  9/24 St. Francis Borgia

The St. Francis Borgia Knights had some impressive wins last season and some respectable losses against some big-time opponents, this matchup shouldn’t be overlooked because these Borgia boys can play.  Big wins over St. Dominic, Hillsboro and Union coupled with tough losses against powerhouses Helias and Fox, the Knights finished 2020 with a 7-4 record and had a nice little run in the postseason.  They did lose their starting QB and leading rusher to graduation though, so Valle’s job got a little easier here, but will no doubt be a challenge in the Warriors Home Opener on a brand new Father John Dempsey Field.

Week 6:  10/1 Jefferson R7

The Jefferson R7 Blue Jays had an incredible run last season with a District Championship, a Conference Championship and a trip to the State Semi-Finals.  They have several returning starters and have shown the ability to reload.  Historically Jefferson has given Valle fits for parts of the game.  Both squads have proven to be real consistent programs and have the ability to get big wins you didn’t see coming.  This maybe the last match-up between these two schools for sometime as Valle exited the I55 conference this year.  The Blue Jays will be looking to get over the hump and get this one.  Should be a great game.

Week 7:  10/8 @ New Madrid

The New Madrid County Central Eagles went 7-5 last year and have only seen the Warriors in action three times since 2012.  New Madrid returns almost all of their starters on both offense and defensive.  The only noticable loss is the graduation of a 1,000 yard rusher at RB.  New Madrid could be the team to beat in Class 2 football in Southeast Missouri and making the long trip down I55 is always tough.  This could be one of the best small school match-ups in Southeast Missouri this fall.

Week 8:  10/15 Westminster

The number 4 is wild in this one.  Westminster only played four games last season due to Covid postpoining there season.  They lost all four.  Don’t let this fool you.  The Wildcats only graduated four Seniors off of a talented 2020 roster and they have quite a few guys on their roster that will likely play big-time college football.  The Warriors have played the Wildcats only two others times , which includes a Warrior win in 2004, and a lop-sided Warrior loss in 2005.  This game will certainly test every aspect of the Warrior program.

Week 9:  10/22 St. Pius

The St. Pius X Lancers are another squad that the Warriors have seen plenty over the years, and they have faired well. Coach Dan Oliver had a young squad in 2020 and played the Warriors extremely tough in 2019.  This squad returns some talented players at the right spots to give the Warriors some issues.

Football is unpredictable by nature, so this 2021-22 season is sure to be filled with surprises, along with fulfilled expectations.  Any given Friday…

Good luck Warriors!
