The start of Spring is officially upon us and that means the Festus Tigers get to begin their golf season once again. Festus, and most others, had their last season stolen from them last year because of COVID-19, but the Tigers are back and ready to start smashing balls off the tee and down the fairway.
The varsity squad will consist of Collin Weinhaus, Isaac Stucke, Cole Rickermann, Nathan Bohn, Ben Oppelz and Grant Flotron. Stucke and Weinhaus come in with the best averages from two seasons ago.
Head Coach Chris Koch is holding his team to a high standard this season and expects to see great things.
“Last year was a complete loss due to COVID. ” Koch said. “Hoping that this veteran group of athletes will be able to win the conference and advance a few to the State Tournament this year.”
The biggest strength of this team is its experience. Every varsity athlete has prior tournament experience and has experienced success in some capacity. The hope is they are able to make the leap and improve upon their prior success.
The Tigers will compete in seven tournaments over the course of the season: Mid-East, Ste. Genevieve, Farmington, Festus, Pallo’s Varsity Quad, Conference and Districts.
The recipe for success will take hard work and dedication. Coach Koch summed it up in just a few words.
“We just need to be firing on all cylinders at the same time. ” He said. “If so, they could win a few tournaments.”
This team is excited to be back on the course for the first time since 2019. Once they shake off the rust and settle in, you can expect big things from the Tiger golfers in 2021.
