On Tuesday, January 26, the Ste. Genevieve Dragons Girls Varsity Wrestling team won three dual matches, successfully sweeping their competition. The Dragons have been on quite a roll since placing third in the SEMO Conference tournament. On this night the Dragons knocked off three schools, including the always tough De Soto, Herculaneum and Notre Dame (Cape Girardeau), as they keep preparing for the end of season district tournament. February 5th is when the matches really start to matter.
Ste. Gen first defeated power house De Soto 30-24. There were three contested weight classes, of which the Dragons won two. Wrestling at the 122 lb. weight class, Dakotah Medows pinned her opponent in 36 seconds. At 195, Maggie Myracle also pinned her opponent, in 2:56.
Myracle was excited for the win and said, “Our team has been focusing on our mindset lately. Before a match the coaches tell me to be offensive and to get my shots in.”
Ste. Gen next defeated Herculaneum 34-0. Isabel Basler, at 127, won the only contested weight class by major decision 18-5.
Lastly, Ste. Gen defeated Notre Dame (Cape Girardeau) 36-0. At 132, Basler again won the only contested weight class, by pin at 42 seconds.
The Dragons seem poised to be quite successful in the district tournament, but until then will keep practicing and preparing, always looking to improve.
