On Wednesday, January 13, the Ste. Genevieve Boys and Girls Varsity Wrestlers competed against three other schools in a quad dual match-up.
The boys had a successful evening, defeating Sikeston and Windsor (Imperial), but lost to Jackson.
The girls, who only had two duals, went 1-1, losing to Jackson but defeating Sikeston.
First, on the boys side, Jackson defeated Ste. Gen 48-26. However, Ste. Gen did manage to win three matches. Dalton McNeal earned a major decision 18-7, as did Bryant Schwent who won 14-4. Nathan Selby pinned his opponent in 1:43.
In the next dual, Ste. Gen defeated Sikeston 57-24. Ste. Gen won nine weight classes. McNeal, Gavin Gross, Selby, Kaleb Myracle, Ethan Ogden, Matthew Schmidt, Dale Propst and Ryan Schmelzle each won by pin. Levi Wiegand also won by decision 10-7.
One thing Myracle said he wanted to improve was his demeanor, and said, “I just need to keep my cool.”
Lastly, Ste. Gen defeated Windsor (Imperial) 53-21. Ste. Gen was victorious in five weight classes. Justin Schwent, Selby, Schmidt and Schmelzle won by pin. McNeal won by technical fall 25-9.
On the Girls side, Ste. Gen was defeated by Jackson 36-24, losing the only contested weight class.
Ste. Gen then defeated Sikeston 30-0, with Isabel Basler winning the only contested weight class by pin in 2:47.
The Dragons will look to continue their hard-nosed style of grappling as they compete this weekend in the St. Charles Tournament.
