In the first match of the season on December 1st, the Ste. Gen Lady Dragons battled fiercely to earn the win in their first dual match, against the Park Hills Central Rebels.
Neither team was able to field a full 14 weight class line-up, so after the eight double forfeits, and a forfeit win for each team, the score was 6-6 with four matches on the card. Then, Central won two matches in a row by pin at the 117 and 127 lb. weight classes, making the score 18-6.
Ste. Gen wouldn’t give in through and mounted an incredible comeback, started by 132 lb Isabel Basler, who scored six team points by pinning her opponent at 48 seconds of round one. Suddenly the score was 18-12… and then it all came down to the final match.
At 195, Maggie Myracle stepped onto the mat and got it done in 47 seconds, pinning her opponent and earning the final six team points, pushing the score to an 18-18 tie. Myracle spoke about the match and her team and said, “That first pin of the season felt great and gave me a lot of my confidence back! We have a lot of new girls this year but they have a lot of drive and will do great!!”
After the matches had finished, with the score knotted at 18 a piece, the tie-breaker points came into play. Using the eighth tie-breaking criteria, “most first points total,” Ste. Gen was awarded the victory 19-18. A bit of a technical way to win a match, but exciting and immensely important nonetheless.
Every point matters in wrestling, especially when a full roster is difficult to maintain, but you can be sure the Ste. Gen Lady Dragon wrestlers will always come to fight. They certainly did so in this one, and were rewarded with their first win of the young season.
