On Saturday, the Hillsboro Hawks soared high with a stunning win over the Sikeston Bulldogs in a non-conference Varsity match. Three goals in the first half and one in the second led to a big victory, and got the Hawks back on the right track.
Hillsboro opened the match fast with a goal after just 39 seconds by Werner Finder, assisted by Sergio Cruz. “We came out and we went hard from the start, resulting in a goal in less than a minute into the game. We kept that momentum going and ended up with a nice win to end the week,” said Head Coach Sam Nansel.
Twenty-four minutes later, Devin Guenther put one into the back of the twine with an assist from Nick Marchetti. It was Guenther’s first goal on the Varsity squad. Guenther commented, “I was pretty open so I just decided to shoot it. It was a pretty heavy pass so I didn’t get much power on it. I didn’t even see it go in. I just remember everyone cheering and my whole team running up to me screaming my name. It was an amazing feeling.”
Ten minutes after that, at minute 34, it was Ryan Walker off a pass from Colton Leonard that gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead. Sikeston got on the board with three minutes left in the half, and after 40 minutes it was a 3-1 Hillsboro lead.
In the second half, at minute 67, Marchetti put the final tally on the board with an assist from Elliott Puhse.
Defensively, Hillsboro goal keeper AJ Krasnesky played all 80 minutes and saved 10 of the 11 shots he faced.
Hillsboro will look to keep their winning ways going on Tuesday (10/6) in another non-conference game, this time traveling to Farmington to take on the Knights.
