On October 8th the Hillsboro Hawks traveled to foreign territory to take on the Lancers of St. Pius in a Varsity non-conference match. The Hawks took home the win after 80 minutes of soccer, in a 3-1 scoring affair. The victory was a measure of revenge after St. Pius’ penalty-kick-victory earlier in the season.
St. Pius got on the board first with a goal in the fourteenth minute, but the score would remain 1-0 for the first half of play.
In the second half it was all Hillsboro, scoring their first goal at minute 52. Sergio Cruz found the back of the net off an assist from Dylan Mooney to tie the game 1-1.
Jacob Bogowith was next up to score at the 70 minute mark. This goal came off a 60-yard free kick.
A short time later, Colton Leonard finished his chance at minute 79. Leonard had quite the goal, and mentioned, “I received a bouncing ball, and played it over their last defender’s head. Then settled with my knee on the other side of the defender, took a couple of touches to set up, and placed it bottom right. That last goal secured us the win.”
Defensively, AJ Krasnesky played 75 minutes and stopped eight of the nine chances he faced. Tate Volmert finished the final five minutes of the match, turning away the one shot he saw. Both schools had 10 shots on goal.
Head Coach Sam Nansel commented, “The boys played with a lot of heart. They came back from being down 1-0 at half time and scored three goals making sure the game was a win after our tough loss to them early in the season.”
With this victory, the Hillsboro Hawks improved their record to 4-10. The squad will host their next match against Windsor on 10/13.
